Home Schooling in Tennessee
Many questions arise in Rhea County concerning
Home School Students. There are two types of Home Schools in Tennessee –
Independent and Church Related.
Independent Home Schools are conducted by
parents. At the elementary level, grades K-8, the parent must have a high
school diploma or its equivalent. The students must be registered for
Independent Home School in the Superintendent’s Office. These students
must take the TCAP test in grades 5 and 7 in the public school they would
normally attend. At the secondary level, grades 9-12, the parent must
have a Bachelor’s Degree, and the student be registered in the
Superintendent’s Office. Students in the 9th grade must take
the appropriate End of Course Test with the public high school students.
Courses at the 9th grade level requiring an End of Course Test
are English 9 and Physical Science.
Church Related Home Schools are conducted by a
parent who is associated with an organization that conducts church-related
home schools, as defined by TCA
49-50-801.
Students registered with a church-related school in grades K through 8
do not have to register with the Superintendent’s
Office. They will take their standardized test at the church-related
school. All students in grades 9-12 enrolled in a church-related home
school must register in the Superintendent’s Office. These students in
grades 9-12 must take the appropriate End of Course Test with the public
school students. At this time those courses are English 9, Physical
Science, Math Foundations II and U.S. History.
