November Newsletter

Reading:

We are working very hard in reading. Your children are learning many new things. We have been learning about story elements (setting and character), story structure, sequence of events, main idea etc. Last month we focused on the letters Mm, Tt, Aa, Ss, and this month we will be working on Pp, Cc, and Ii. Not only are we working on learning these letters by sight, we are also working on the sounds of the letters. Please help with these at home. Some of the children are struggling with learning the letters of the alphabet and the sight words, and these are very important skills that are needed to be mastered by your child before they go to First Grade.

Math:

We have been working on recognizing and writing numbers 1-10 and are counting 1-25; we will begin to start counting to 50 this month. We have also been counting by 10’s, up to 50. We are reviewing shapes and patterns regularly.

Spelling:

We have been working on the children’s first names since school started, and we will begin practicing last names too. The children have to write their name correctly, beginning the first letter with a capital letter and the other letters lower case. We will begin spelling some of our sight words, and we will also begin writing words by sounding them out using the letters we have been learning.

Writing:

We are working very hard on forming the numbers and letters correctly. We also are working on the recognition of each one. As I stated before, these are extremely important skills to get ready for first grade.

Suggestions for parents:

Please work with your child each night. Please go over letters and numbers and sight words with them regularly. Some of the children are struggling with these skills, and the extra help at home would benefit them greatly. Make flash cards with the letters, numbers, and sight words on them and do them every night before you go to bed. It would really help, and I know that you want your child to be a success as much (if not more) as I do. Please go over their papers with them at home daily; this would show them that school is very important to you as well as their teacher. I thank you so much for all that you do at home to make your child very successful.

Reminders:

Please send back pictures or money. Some of these have not been turned in and we need them as soon as possible.
