  1. Action verb-describes activity.
  2. Linking verb- connects the subject to a word or words in the predicate that tell more about the subject.  It does not have an action verb with it.
  3. Linking verbs are: am, is, are, was, were, be, being, been, seem, feel, taste, look, smell.
  4. Use the linking verbs AM & WAS when the subject is I.
  5. Use the linking verbs IS & WAS when the subject is he, she, it, or a singular noun.
  6. Use the linking verbs ARE & WERE when the subject is we, you they, or a plural noun.
  7. Linking verbs DO NOT have an action verb with it.
  8. Helping verb- helps the main verb describe the action.  It has to have a helping verb with it.
  9. Helping verbs are: am, are, be, being, been, can, could, do, did, does, has, have, had, is, may, might, must, shall, should, was, were, will, would.
  10. USUALLY when the main verb ends in –ING, use am, is, are, was, were.
  11. USUALLY when the main verb ends in –ED, use has, have, had.
  12. When you use the helping verb WILL, the main verb remains unchanged.
  13. Main verb- the most important verb.  It works with the helping verb.
  14. Direct object-receives the action of the verb, is found in the predicate, comes after an action verb& is a noun. It answers the question WHOM or WHAT.
  15. Verb tense- tells the time the action takes place or the state of being.
  16. Present tense- means NOW.
  17. Present tense verbs need to agree with the subject of the sentence.
  18. 4 rules to form present tense verbs:

1)      Singular nouns, add –s or –es.

2)      Plural nouns, DO NOT add –s or –es.

3)      With HE, SHE, IT, add –s or –es.

4)      With I, YOU, WE, THEY, DO NOT use –s or –es.

  1. Past tense- shows action that already happened. Add -ed to these verbs.
  2. Future tense- shows action that will happen. Use WILL or SHALL to form these verbs.
  3. Irregular verbs- formed in unpredictable ways. They do not form past and past participle by adding –ed.
  4. Past participle-verb form used with the helping verbs- has, have, or had to form the past.
  5. 3 common patterns to form past and past participle verb forms:

1)      some verbs have the same past & past participle.

2)      Some form the past participle by adding –n to the past.

3)      Some change one vowel in the past and in the past participle.

  1. CAN means to be able to do something.
  2. MAY is used when you ask or give permission.
  3. SITto rest.
  4. SET to put or place something.
  5. Prefix- word part added to the beginning of a word that changes the meaning of a word.
  6. Base word- the simplest from of a word.
  7. Simile- uses like or as to compare two things.
  8. Metaphor – compares two things by saying one thing is the other.
  9. Prefixes and their meanings-

Dis- opposite of                                    micro - small

Mis- wrong, wrongly                            octa - eight

Pre- before                                           post- after

Re- again, back                                    mega- great

Un- not, opposite of                             sub- below, under

Co- together                                         geo – earth, land

De- not                                                deca- ten

Hexa- six                                              audio- - sound, hearing

Multi- many                                          bio -  life, living

  1. Verbs are words that describe action or a state of being.
  2. Be able to tell the difference between a simile and a metaphor within a given sentence.
