- Action
verb-describes activity.
- Linking
verb- connects the subject to a word or words in the
predicate that tell more about the subject. It does
not have an action verb with it.
- Linking
verbs are: am, is, are, was, were, be, being, been,
seem, feel, taste, look, smell.
- Use
the linking verbs AM & WAS when the subject is I.
- Use
the linking verbs IS & WAS when the subject is
he, she, it, or a singular noun.
- Use
the linking verbs ARE & WERE when the subject is
we, you they, or a plural noun.
- Linking
verbs DO NOT have an action verb with it.
- Helping
verb- helps the main verb describe the action. It
has to have a helping verb with it.
- Helping
verbs are: am, are, be, being, been, can, could, do,
did, does, has, have, had, is, may, might, must, shall,
should, was, were, will, would.
- USUALLY
when the main verb ends in ING, use am, is,
are, was, were.
- USUALLY
when the main verb ends in ED, use has, have, had.
- When you
use the helping verb WILL, the main verb remains
unchanged.
- Main
verb- the most important verb. It works with
the helping verb.
- Direct
object-receives the action of the verb, is found in
the predicate, comes after an action verb& is a noun.
It answers the question WHOM or WHAT.
- Verb
tense- tells the time the action takes place or the
state of being.
- Present
tense- means NOW.
- Present
tense verbs need to agree with the subject of the
sentence.

rules to form present tense verbs:
1)
Singular nouns, add s or es.
2)
Plural nouns, DO NOT add s or es.
3)
With HE, SHE, IT, add s or es.
4)
With I, YOU, WE, THEY, DO NOT use s or es.
- Past
tense- shows action that already happened. Add -ed to
these verbs.
- Future
tense- shows action that will happen. Use WILL or
SHALL to form these verbs.
- Irregular
verbs- formed in unpredictable ways. They do not form
past and past participle by adding ed.
- Past
participle-verb form used with the helping verbs- has,
have, or had to form the past.

common patterns to form past and past participle verb
forms:
1)
some verbs have the same past & past participle.
2)
Some form the past participle by adding n to the past.
3)
Some change one vowel in the past and in the past participle.
- CAN
means to be able to do something.
- MAY
is used when you ask or give permission.
- SIT
to rest.
- SET
to put or place something.
- Prefix-
word part added to the beginning of a word that changes
the meaning of a word.
- Base
word- the simplest from of a word.
- Simile-
uses like or as to compare two things.
- Metaphor
compares two things by saying one thing is the
other.

Pre- before
post- after
Re- again, back
mega- great
Un- not, opposite
of

- Verbs are
words that describe action or a state of being.
- Be able
to tell the difference between a simile and a metaphor
within a given sentence.
