Dashes

  1. A dash works like a comma to separate phrases or clauses in a sentence. (President Bush-along with many others-studied law before entering politics.)

  2. A dash works like a colon to separate lists. (I had three choices-stand, run, or sit.)

  3. A dash works like an ellipsis to show interrupted or unfinished statements. (I would never have guessed, but then- )

  4. A dash works like a comma to separate appositives. (My father-a great guybuilt a boxcar for the derby.)

  5. Between numbers in a page reference. (423-427)
