There are two Spelling tests each week.

A Wednesday test is composed of 20 list words,

2 or 3 frequently misspelled words, and 5 challenge words.

The challenge words are extra points,

1 point per word for a maximum of 5 points.

105 is the highest grade that can be made.

If you make 105, you are not required

DEFINITIONS FOR SET 1

SET 1--Sum, Addend, Standard Form, Expanded Form, Place Value Chart.

SUM--The answer when you add.

ADDEND--The numbers that you add

STANDARD FORM--Writing the number using all numbers.

EXPANDED FORM--Writing a number using addends to show the value of each digit.

PLACE VALUE CHART--hundred millions, ten millions, millions, hundred thousands,

ten thousands, thousands, hundreds, tens, and one.

WORD FORM--Writing a number using only words.

PLACE VALUE CHART--hundred millions, ten millions, millions, hundred thousands, ten thousands, thousands, hundreds, tens, and one.

 

Definitions for Set 2--

Synonyms for Estimate--Almost, about, close to, approximately, nearly.

Rounding Rules--(1) Look at the rounding place/number. (2) Ask the neighbor on the right.

If the neighbor on the right is 0,1,2,3, or 4....the rounding place goes down. . If the neighbor on the right is 5,6,7,8, or 9...the rounding place goes up.

Bar Graph--A graph with bars to compare information.

Counting Quarters to $6.00--25, 50, 75, 100, 125, 150, 175, 200, 225, 250, 275, 300, 325, 350, 375, 400, 425, 450, 475, 500, 525, 550, 575, 600.

Factors--The numbers that you multiply.

Addend--The numbers that you add,

Product--The answer when you multiply.

Sum--The answer when you add.

Definitions for Set 3--

Odd numbers have a 1,3,5,7, or 9 in the ones' place.

Even numbers have a 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8 in the ones' place.

Difference--The answer when you subtract

Range--The larger number minus the smaller number equals the range.

Fact Family--Related facts that use the same numbers.

Definitions for Set 4--

 

Horizontal--a line where the sky seems to meet the earth.

Vertical--Straight up and down.

Data--Information that is gathered.

 

Consecutive Numbers--Counting by ones with no skips or breaks.

 

Set 5 Definitions:

Median: The middle number when you arrange numbers in order from

least to greatest or greatest to least.

Regrouping: To make 1 ten form 10 ones, to make 1 hundred form 10 tens,

to make 1 thousand to form 10 hundreds.

Symmetry: An object has symmetry if you fold it and both sides

match exactly.

Factor: The numbers that you multiply.

Product: The answer when you multiply.

 

Set 6 Definitions:

Prime Number: A number with only 2 factors, the number 1 and the

number itself.

Composite Number: A number with 3 factors or more.

Column: A vertical list.

Row: A horizontal list.

Array: An arrangement of objects in rows and columns.

Set 7 Definitions

Quotient: The answer when you divide.

Divisor: The number you divide by.

Dividend: The number that is divided.

Identity Property of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and

division: When you add and subtract with 0, the identity of

the number doesn't change. When you divide or multiply by 1,

the identity of the number doesn't change.

Zero Property of division---IMPOSSIBLE, you cannot divide by zero.

 

Set 8 Definitions

 

Perimeter : The distance around an object.

Area: The number of square units inside an object.

Remainder Rule: The remainder must always be less than the divisor.

Fahrenheit Thermometer--Measures temperature--

32 degrees water freezes--212 degree water boils.

Celsius Thermometer--Measures temperature--

0 degrees water freezes--100 degrees water boils.

Set 9 Definitions

Congruent--Same Size and Same Shape

Similar--Same Size, not necessarily Same Shape

A.M.--The Time after midnight and before 12 noon.

P.M.--The Time after 12 noon and before midnight.

Parallel--Two lines that never cross or intersect.

 

Set 10 Definitions

Average--Mean--They are synonyms. Find how to make each group have

the same amount. Step 1--Find the sum. Step 2 Divide the sum by the

number of addends.

Data--Information that is gathered.

Mode--Most popular

Median--The middle number when you put numbers in order from least

to greatest or greatest to least.

Range--Larger-Smaller = Difference

Set 11 Definitions

Intersecting lines--Lines that cross, meet, touch, or join.

Clock quarters--quarter past and quarter before.

Perpendicular lines intersect in a special way. They form perfect corners

called right angles.

A square has 4 congruent sides and opposite sides are parallel.

A rectangle has 4 sides and opposite sides are congruent and parallel.

Set 12 definitions

Numerator is the number on top of the fraction bar. Denominator is the

number under the fraction bar.

Proper Fraction--The numerator is smaller than the denominator.

Equivalent fractions are fractions that name the same amount.

6 names for 1/2=2/4 =3/6 =4/8 =5/10 =6/12.

Steps to checking division--Multiply the quotient times the divisor and

add the remainder if there is one.

Set 13 Definitions

Flip--To pick up and turn over, a mirror image, also called a reflection.

Slide--To move along a straight line.

Turn--To move around a point without picking up, also called a rotation.

Add and Subtract Fractions--Make sure the denominators are the same, then

add the numerators.

Set 14 Definitions

Line--A straight path that goes on forever in opposite directions.

Line Segment--A part of a line with two endpoints.

Ray--Part of a line that goes on forever in one direction.

Place Value Chart of Decimals--hundred millions, ten millions, millions,

hundred thousands, ten thousands, thousands, hundreds, tens, ones,

DECIMAL, tenths, hundredths, thousandths.

Angle--Two rays with a common endpoint.

Probability--The chance an event will occur.
