Parent Tips

As you prepare for the holidays, it is a wonderful time to let your child help with the planning. Let them help you prepare a menu and then give them the weekly specials newspaper from local grocery stores. Let them try to find the best value for the money. Give them a calculator and have them determine the total cost of the meal.

If you are planning a trip for the holidays, it is an excellent time to help your child with map skills. Give them a map and tell them your destination. Let them calculate how many miles from their home to the destination. Help them calculate how long it will take by telling them the average speed you will be driving. They can also calculate the cost of fuel.

Cook something with your child. Let them have the experience of measuring liquids and solids.

Let your child help you build something and get a better understanding of linear measurement and fractions.

Allow your child to help you with the shopping list. Look in the sale papers to help your child have a better understanding of money and how to make good economic decisions.

Help your child learn their math facts. Purchase or make the appropriate flash cards and practice with them at least 10 minutes per day.
