Mrs. Layman's Transition Class

WELCOME TO MRS. LAYMAN'S TRANSITION CLASS AT RHEA CENTRAL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WHAT IS THE TRANSITION CLASS? The Transition Class is a class between kindergarten and first grade. Some students who have attended Kindergarten need more time to master the skills taught in Kindergarten before going on to First Grade. It is not the same as repeating Kindergarten. The students in this class are selected by the Kindergarten teachers and the Principal at the end of the kindergarten year based on the student's academic and social progress during the kindergarten year. The class is kept low in number to give time for more individualized attention.

WHAT IS THE CURRICULUM OF THE TRANSITION CLASS? The emphasis in the Transition class is on reading and mathematics. Reading is taught by a phonics-based program called Beginning to Read, Write, and Listen. It has a workbook for each letter of the alphabet with words formed from the letters and sounds as they are taught. In addition, some parts of the kindergarten level of the McGraw-Hill Reading Series used by the elementary grades are used to teach the High-Frequency words necessary for entering First Grade. The math curriculum is Mathematics Their Way, which emphasizes the use of manipulatives to teach math. Printed worksheets are used to supplement and reinforce. There is not a student math textbook.
