What Is Reading Recovery?

Reading Recovery is a short-term intervention for first-graders who are having difficulty learning to read. The goal of the program is to help get children back on track before the child is left behind in the area of reading. The program teaches good reading behaviors, and helps children develop reading strategies that are necessary for a fluent reading and writing process. The instruction lasts for 15-20 weeks. It gives the student individualized instruction with a Reading Recovery teacher. One in six schools, who serve first graders, now offer Reading Recovery as part of their first grade reading program.
