Reminder: amount of extra credit depends on amount of effort and accuracy of your information.
Government-- topic from teacher textbook page at first of chapter, technology activities at the end of the chapter, and/or open ended subjects related to items like the Constitution, The Patriot Act, etc. Students are to construct posters, research papers, power point presentations, etc. Students need to ask about topic before completing assignment to ensure that topic is appropriate. All assignments have to be turned in while we are discussing that chapter.
Chapter 1: Have each student find news or research articles pertaining to some topic covered in the chapter, write a summary of the article, and explain how it relates to the chapter. Then have students write three questions that are answered in the article.
Chapter 2: Have students create a time line of the major events in the chapter. Ask students to illustrate the time line and write a brief explanation of each event's importance to the growth of United States government.
Chapter 3: The average national constitution contains about 26,500 words, more than 3 times as many as the United States one. The United States one has provided a stability that few other nations have enjoyed. Have students research and write a brief report comparing the United States Consititution with the constitutions of several other nations. Focus on such points as length, time in use, and values reflected in the documents.
Chapter 4: Congress has the power to add new states to the Union. Find out how adn when your state was first settled, developed government, and was admitted to the Union. Use research materials from your school or local library and present your findings in an illustrated report or poster. Create a time line that includes important governmental developments.
Chapter 5: Complete a poster profile of the 111th Congress using the one on textbook page 129 as an example.
Chapter 8: Create a poster on the current president. Include biographical information as well as illustrations. Major accomplishments while in office would also be a plus.
Chapter 11: Compare the Hammurabic Code (back of book) laws with laws currently in use in the United States. Use an example of the same type for each comparison. Include at least 10 examples.
Chapter 12: Search the internet for a web site that has information about recent cases heard by the Supreme Court. Choose a case and write a summary of the ruling, the majority opinion, and the dissenting opinion.
Chapter 13: Choose one of the many supreme court cases mentioned in the chapter to complete and illustrated poster on. Include facts and relevant illustrations.
or, Research the means used by civil rights groups to achieve their goals. Students may assess the ways by which groups such as the United Farm Workers, AIM and La Raza Unida sought to improve their civil and equal rights. Also compare and contrast the methods of the various civil rights movements and to report on their effectiveness.
Chapter 14: Research the Patriot Act. Report and illustrate the act and its major provisions.
You can do one thing really well, or if you need to, several smaller ones. I DO NOT WANT COPY AND PASTED REPORTS!!! I want some effort... You can use material from the internet, but it needs to be "part" of your assignment not all of it.
