Core Curriculum
Construction Core is a course that will introduce studnets to basic skills and knowledge applicable to all construction trades. Topics covered include safety, project drawings, hand and power tools, linear and angular measurements, and site layout.
Recommended Grade Levels: 9th, 10th, and 11th
Standards:
1.0 Students will demonstrate leadership, citizenship, and teamwork skills required for success in the school, commuity, and workplace.
2.0 Students will identify and demonstrate basic principles of safety procedures used in the construction industry.
3.0 Students will interpret drawings and written specifications and relate them to the construction layout.
4.0 Students will trace the growth and development and career paths within the construction industry.
5.0 Students will evaluate career opportunities and career paths within the construction industry.
6.0 Students will identify, select, inspect, safely use, maintain, and store hand tools.
7.0 Students will identify, select, inspect, safely use, maintain, and store power tools.
8.0 Students will make and lay out linear and angular measurements.
9.0 Students will trasfer mathematics concepts to solve problems encountered in the construction industry.
10.0 Students will demonstrate profieiency in creating two and three dimensional scale drawings.
Carpentry I
Carpentry I is a course that will introduce students to basic skills and knowledge related to residential carpentry. Topics covered include wood materials, fasteners; hand and power tools; fabrication based on construction plans; and framing of platform and post-and-beam structures. This course gives students an introduction to the skill and knowledge base typically required for apprentice carpenters.
Recommended Grade Level: 10th, 11th and 12th
Standards:
1.0 Students will demonstrate leadership, citizenship, and teamwork skills required for success in the school, community, and workplace.
2.0 Students will assume responsibility for the safety of themselves, their coworkers, and bystanders.
3.0 Students will interpret, lay out, and fabricate in conformance to construction drawinggs and written specifications.
4.0 Studetns will identify and select typical wood building materials and fasteners.
5.0 Students will use appropriate hand and power tools to safely achieve industry accepted results.
6.0 Students will construct forms: install reinformcement; and place, finish, and cure concrete in accordance with construction drawings and specifications.
7.0 Students will compare and contrast post-and-beam structures, platform structures, load bearing walls, panel walls, and curtain walls.
8.0 Students will compare and contrast dimensioned lumber, engineered shapes, and trussed structures for load bearing span applications.
9.0 Students will demonstrate the importance of bridging and diagonal bracing of floor and wall structures.
Carpentry II
Carpentry II is a course in whcih students will extend their skills and knowledge related to residential and commercial carpentry. Topics covered include stairs, installation and trim of windows and doors, installation and repair of gypsum wallboard, advanced site layout, exterior finish work, thermal and moisture protection. This course gives students a sbustantial skill and knowledge foundation typically required for apprentice carpenters.

Standards

2.0 Students will assume responsibility for the safety of themselves, their coworkers, and bystanders.
3.0 Students will interpret, lay out, and fabricate in conformance to construction drawinggs and written specifications.
4.0 Students will install windows and doors in residential and commercial structures.
5.0 Students will explore the geometry and methods of fabrication of stairs.
6.0 Students will install, finish, and repair gypsum wallboard.
7.0 Students will install trim on doors, windows, and other features.
8.0 Students will perfomr site layouts with radial measurements.
9.0 Students will complete exterior finish work on residential and commercial structures.
10.0 Students will describe the need for and methods of achieving thermal and moisture protection.
11.0 Students will demonstrate communication skills required in the carpentry and construction industry.
12.0 Students will utilize carpentry knowledge and skills to apply in a work-based or school project-based learning experience.
