Beowulf

Introduction: Beowulf is the oldest surviving epic in British literature. When it was finally written down, it marked the beginning of English literature. This Anglo-Saxon epic, set in 6th Century Scandinavia, relates the adventures of a Scandinavian hero named Beowulf. Beowulf makes it his goal to rid Herot and the Danes of the hidious monster, Grendel, and later of Grendel's devilish mother. After accomplishing this mission, Beowulf returns to his homeland, Geatland, to fight a dragon, a fight that eventually claims his life. This heroic poem consisting of 3,182 lines, was written down in Old English sometime during the 11th Century.
